Last Christmas we gave Some Voices our heart…but the very next year…the choir is returning for not one, not two, but THREE consecutive nights! We sat down with some of the team to find out why TimeOut calls them “London’s Coolest Choir” and what we can expect from their ‘Top of Your Pops Christmas countdown’ concerts.
Some Voices was founded in 2010 by Musical Director Laura Howe with just six members. She was inspired to set up the choir as a way to connect with other music lovers after moving to London. Her aim was to form a community around a love of singing, but focused on performing contemporary favourites rather than classical music.
Unlike most other choirs, Some Voices don’t hold auditions. Everyone is welcome! It’s all about getting together, belting out great songs and having loads of fun. In fact, the Guardian described singing with them as “the closest thing to being a rock star.”
You’re playing three consecutive dates at Troxy this December, what do you love about the venue?
“Troxy is one of our favourite venues in London, having previously presented Romeo + Juliet and Seasonal Speakeasy in recent years on its fabulous stage. We love Troxy’s history, fabulous art-deco styling and the size of the space which gives us the opportunity to create huge, immersive productions. We get excited about filling the stage with hundreds of singers and a live band, and packing out the auditorium with our audience who are guaranteed an unforgettable night of music and entertainment.”
What can guests expect from Some Voices ‘Top of Your Pops Christmas Countdown?’
“You will be immersed in the world of the ultimate TV chart show featuring all your favourite songs and stars from the 1990’s. Presented by 90s TV icons Andi Peters and Pat Sharp, this show will take you back to the glory of the 90s and give you a Christmas night out like no other. Expect tunes from Britney to Blur, Nirvana to N-trance, Backstreet Boys to Blackbox, performed by 500 singers and a live band.”
What’s the best thing about Christmas in London?
“There is nothing better than getting together with friends, family and loved ones at Christmas for a good old sing-a-long. Whether that’s carol singing in one of London’s beautiful churches or with mates in the pub belting out ‘Fairytale of New York’ – for us it’s all about the Christmas music vibes!”
What’s the best ever Christmas song according to Some Voices?
“How could we choose just one? But from the 90s, we have a very soft spot for East 17’s Stay Another Day – which is one of our favourite moments in this show! Look out for the furry parka jackets.”
Some Voices isn’t just fun, it’s also FABULOUS, as shown by the fact Some Voices now have a whopping 1000 members and 15 venues rehearsing weekly across London.
Tickets are available on DICE now for Some Voices ‘Top of Your Pops Christmas countdown’ at Troxy this December but those tickets might not stay another day so we’d recommend booking soon.
